Grandma’s Quilt

My little sister and I made this quilt for our mom.  I saw this pattern at a quilt shop and thought it would be a nice quilt for my mom because she likes the “over the river” song, but I didn’t buy the pattern until after I came across the fabric that Moda had made called Glace.  Once I saw the fabric I knew that it would go perfectly with the pattern because it is a nice sublte Christmasy print.  So I bought the pattern and fabric last October and called my sister and asked her if she would be interested in doing the embroidery work on it.  Embroidery is more her forte and piecing is more my thing.  So I figured between the two of us we could make this quilt really nice.  We tried to get it done before Christmas last year, but Kirby was finishing up her batchelors degree and I had stuff going on too so we didn’t get it finished in time.  I finished getting it pieced this spring and sent off to the quilters.  I went with a quilter I hadn’t used before, which always makes me nervous but she did a really good job for a very reasonable price.  I was happy with all the detailing she did on it.  There are stars in the sky,  snow like quilting on the ground and she did snowflakes in the stars inbetween the panels, and ivy leaves on the sashing, soo many nice little touches.  I’m happy with the way it turned out and I hope my mom acutally uses it as a lap blanket instead of hanging it on the wall.  🙂

Merry Christmas!

I’m so grateful for the birth of our Savior.  He came to earth, taught us how to live and serve and atoned for our sins.  I can’t think of a better gift than that.

Merry Christmas from my family to yours.  I hope you enjoy the day with the ones you love!

My Crazy Kitchen

I had to laugh this morning at the state of my kitchen.  On the counter top is big pile of sugar/ingredients that I’m getting together to make neighbor cookie plates.  I don’t think I’ve had soo much naughty food in my house all at once before.  I was complaining in my mind about how many cookies I’m going to have to do for neighbors (about thirty plates) and for Justins work people (two big platters) and then I realized how blessed I am to have so many nice neighbors and how blessed we are for Justins employment.

To the other side of my kitchen table seems to be missing.  Anyone seen it?  Oh yeah, it’s in the front room.  This is my last homemade Christmas present! I was nervous about not getting it done in time, but I think it should be complete in the middle of next week.  I can’t post a picture of the backing with the top pinned to it because Justin does check this blog every once in awhile.  But I can tell you that it is going to be awesome! When I started the project of doing a T-shirt quilt for Justin I wasn’t to enthused about it, but since I found the {PERFECT} fabric and sulky thread to quilt it with I’m happy with the way it’s going.  I think it’s even going to turn out better than the one I did for my little brother.  Wahoo! If your wondering why I taped the backing down to the kitchen floor – I found this awesome tutorial on Crazy Mom Quilts on how to stretch out your fabric and safety pin it without needing quilting frames.  Happy Christmas mess making to ya!

Apple and Oat Baby Food

I love the BeechNut baby food because its organic and has grains and fruits mixed together, but sixty seven cents for six ounces of food.  Really?  Pre-prepared (is that a word) is really a convenience item because it is handy to have for traveling and things but really it’s not all that hard to make at home.  I came across this easy recipe for apple and oatmeal cereal and Maddy loves that stuff.  She will eat anything, but this stuff she inhales.  So let me share the recipe with you.  Your baby might like it too. (I timesed this recipe by four.  Timesed is a word – I swear.)

1 apple

1/4 cup oats (grind up the fourth cup of oats in the food processor or blender)

3/4 cup water

1.  Peel, core and dice the apple.

2. Place apple chunks in a pan with the oats and water.

3.  Bring the mixture to a slow boil.  Simmer covered until apples are soft and the oats are cooked.

4.  Put the mixture in a food processor to break down the apples even more.

If you don’t serve this while it’s warm you can reheat a single portion in the microwave for thirty seconds at fifty percent power.  It’s soo easy, cheap and healthy!

Dough Ornaments

Macey and I had soo much fun last Saturday making dough ornaments.  Jenn at Craft-O-Maniac posted the instructions on how to make these.  Saturday was the perfect day for doing this project with Macey.  All the chores were done, we didn’t have anywhere we needed to go, it was just a nice, chill day at home.  Macey helped mix the dough, roll it out, use the cookie cutters to make the shapes and put them on the cookie sheet.  After they baked we decorated them with glitter glue.  Macey used the big size cookie cutters and I used my mini set of cookie cutters to make little ornaments for the bough hanging over the entry way mirror.

As Macey and I were making these she kept saying the cutest things, like “This is soo fun momma!”, “Ooooh sooo pretty!”, “I love these fancy sparkles!”  It was a fun way to spend the afternoon with my little girl.  To get the instructions on how to make these go here.  The only difference I made was I used a number five Wilton icing tip to punch out the little circles for the ornament hook.  Happy ornament making to ya!

Ruffle Christmas Trees

I love all the ruffle trees that people are making this year.  They’re so cute and . . . ruffley.  With two little girls at my house we’re all about the {ruffles}. I did mine with candlesticks from the DI (thrift store) that I spray painted an off-white,  styrofoam cones, scrap fabric and wood stars that I had on hand.  The fabric is a Christmas print from Moda called Glace.  I love it because it’s a subtle, classy Christmas print, and I’m glad I found a project to use up some of the scraps leftover from a quilt.  I like the ruffles trees that have wood finials on top, but I kept forgetting to buy them at the craft store.  Anyhow, I know there are a lot fancier ruffle trees out there in blogland, but I thought I’d share mine!

Nativity Silhouette

I guess the title pretty much sums it up.  I bought the frame for five dollars at Walmart.  Took the back out and used E6000 to glue the glass to the frame on the backside.  Just a little sidenote about the E6000 glue – I bought that stuff last week and I have used it a ton since then.  Where has it been all my life?  I glued the little hangy thingys back onto ornaments, I used it to glue the white rubber thingys back onto the door stoppers that Maddy pulled off (potential choking hazard!), and all sorts of stuff.  So back to the nativity picture –  then I used my Silhouette to cut out the nativity scene onto vinyl and stuck it onto the glass.  Tada! A fancy schmancy Christmas decoration for notalotta money!

Snowman Bows

I made these little lovelies for Macey because I knew she would love them – and she does – A LOT. Thank you Funky Polka Dot Giraffe for the tutorial!

Snowflakes

Why do things not look as cool in pictures as they do in real life?  Macey is obsessed with snow lately.  Unfortunately for her, it doesn’t snow a whole lot down here in southern Utah.  So I thought it would be fun if when she woke up in the morning I had a whole bunch of snowflakes hanging in the house.  So after she went to bed I got out my Silhouette and cut out as many snowflakes as I could and then when Justin got home from work we hung them on the light fixture in the entryway.  When she woke up the next morning she saw the snowflakes and was soo excited!  I love doing little things for her like that.  It didn’t cost a thing and she thought it was soo cool that there was “snow” in the house.
