Happy Friday

Happy Friday ya’all!  Our family had a great Thanksgiving!  The boys went shooting and my mom and I cooked and cooked. Haha! It was great though.  Everything turned out delicious.  Mom said we were going to scale back a bit on food, but she fibbed and made every dish she always does except for Grandma’s nasty cabbage salad (thank goodness, mayo and cabbage should never be in jello).

Tonight we are starting a new tradition of Elf on the Shelf.  I’m excited for it because I know the girls will love it.  I have a whole pinterest board dedicated to Elf on the Shelf ideas.

Last Sunday was my birthday.  Happy 29 to me.  Wow I’m old!  We did a little family dinner party and it was really nice. I don’t want to be braggy or anything but I might have gotten a garmin.  My sister gave me a itunes gift card which I put to good use last night and downloaded a bunch of songs I’ve been wanting for a long time.  I’ve got my playlist all ready to go running with tomorow morning and I’m really excited about it!  I downloaded Firework, Dynamite (an explosive playlist for sure), Party Rock, Good Life, Pumped up kicks (Biggest loser has an awesome remix of this song!!), and Somewhere with You.  I’m contemplating adding some Adele songs but I’m not sure if they’d be good running music or not.  So, what are your favorite songs on your ipod?

Christmas Cards

Every year I do the picture for our Christmas cards myself.  Some years they turn out great, some years not so great.  This year is just . . .  eh.  Not bad, but not the best.  I saw on pintrest (of course) this awesome idea for the background.  Mine didn’t turn out nearly as cools as hers but check it out at propinsanity.com.

So the Christmas cards are done and ordered, even addressed (just needs stamps) before Thanksgiving.  Of course my motivation for getting this done so early is that Costco offers a discount if you pick them up before Thanksgiving.

Here’s my envelope all done up with a Stampin’ Up stamp.  It gives it it a little extra “Merry Christmasness” don’t ya think?  I just send cards to grandparents, aunts and uncles, and siblings.  If a cousin or friend sends me a card then I’ll send them one as well.  Call me a stamp scrooge, but it just costs too much to send one to everyone. So what’s your Christmas card policy?  Do you send cards to every single person your related to?  Just your favorite people?  Let me know!

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer Hair Bows

I came up with this bow idea all on my own.  These reindeer are a Mariesa original!  Macey (my little four-year-old) is excited to wear them to preschool. I told her she has to wait until after Thanksgiving to wear them and she was major bummed about that.  So enough chitter-chatter, let me show you how to make your own!

Cut three pieces of ribbon.  3, 4, and 5 inches. I used 3/8 inch grosgrain ribbon.

Loop them around and hot glue down.

Hot glue them together.  That’s the belly, now lets make the face.

Cut a piece of ribbon 2.5 inches long.  Loop around and hot glue down.  Then press it flat and put some glue in the corners so it stays flat.

To make the antlers cut a piece of ribbon at 1.5 inches and the smaller pieces at .5 inches.  Cut the ridges off the edge.  You could heat seal these with a wood burning tool if you have one.  They will fray a little bit if you don’t.

I’ve found it’s easiest to put these together with tweezers.

Line a clip with ribbon and then assemble your pieces together.

And there you have some cute Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer hair clips!

Turkey Bows

I can’t believe it’s time to break out the turkey bows again!

Here’s the post from last year.

Should I do a tutorial on these?  I can’t decide.

Happy Gobble Gobble to ya!

Activity Days – Turkey Cookies

For our activity yesterday we made turkey cookies like the ones off of Our Best Bites.

“H’s” turkey’s totally turned out cute.  The other girls had a hard time not eating their candy.

I can’t remember who’s plate this was, but they turned out cute too.

Whenever there is candy involved the girls have a great time.  For our next activity I think we will do gingerbread houses – that’ll be fun.   It’s funny how by the end of the activities they are bouncing off the walls – and then we send them home on a fabulous sugar high.

Activity Days is an LDS activity for eight to eleven year old girls.

I Did It!

I went out and did something that I thought I would never do.

I went out and ran in the f-f-freezing cold.  I hate the cold!  It was 44 degrees (which may as well be 30 below in my book), but I went out and did it and it felt great.  The headband and jacket made all the difference.  I tried to do a run last week without them and I only lasted about a half mile before I turned around and ran for my cozy warm home.  Last week I went shopping at Target to get some warm running gear and was surprised to find a cute headband in the fitness dept.  I was expecting to just buy a lame black one.  Bonus points to Target! Plus it matches my shirt and ipod armband.  Not that that really matters, but like I told Justin, I run better when I look cute – it’s a mental thing.  So now that I have over overcome my issue with running in the cold weather maybe I can overcome my issue with shopping at Costco on a Saturday.  Er maybe not. . . .

Flower Bow Tutorial

I haven’t done a bow tutorial in forever!  Now that Halloween is finally over I can come out of my sewing room and start making some cute bows!  I came up with this little flower bow to go with Macey’s purple shirt.  I took pictures as I went along in case you want to make one to.

Cut seven pieces of 7/8ths inch grosgrain ribbon to four inches.

Pinch the ribbon in half and put a little dob of hot glue in there.

Flip it over and glue the ribbon down so it makes a triangle.

It’ll look like this from the front.

Squish the bottom of your “petal” into a “s” shape and put a dob of glue where the arrows are.  And repeat with all your other pieces of ribbon.

Line a clip with ribbon and start gluing your petals down.

When your done it should look like this.

Glue a button or something cute in the center.

Ahem.  And lastly clean up your mess.  I don’t know where those came from.

Happy bow making to ya!

A Kind Email

I received this kind email from a blog reader this morning that totally brightened my day, so I thought I would share it.  I hope Pat doesn’t mind.

Hi!

Just a note to let you know I enjoy your blog. The name “Ten Cow Chick” makes me think of a movie I showed to my home ec classes over many years, Johnny Lingo. In it he purchased himself a “ten cow woman.” It was such a cute movie–reel to reel, that I even showed it to a woman’s group I belonged to. (all about the more cows that were paid for you as a dowry when you wed, the more valued…everyone thought Mahatma was ugly til Johnny Lingo paid ten cows and took her off on a honeymoon. Sure ‘nough, when she arrived back in the village she was very beautiful…..:)

Just wanted to say hi and see if that’s where you got your name. I have a new granddaughter, Lucy Grace, who was born Sunday, Oct. 23, so I am now in a hurry to makes some bows for her. Unfortunately, they live in West Hartford CT and we live on Topsail Island NC.

Again, thanks for sharing your creativity!

Blessings!

Pat

PS I don’t have a blog, but I have found that blogs are much better than any magazine!

Thank you Pat! Yes, the name of my blog comes from the Johnny Lingo movie. I love that movie. If only we all knew our true worth. The movie was produced by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The church that I belong to. I saw it first in seminary class and the meaning of it has stuck with me all these years. Congratulations on your new grandbaby! I love her name. That’s too bad they don’t live closer. Happy bow making to you and thank you for the kind email!

Sincerely,

Mariesa Morgan

I agree, blogs are much better than magazines 🙂

After Halloween I hope to get a few more bow tutorials on here.  Soo many ideas in my head, soo little time!

Halloween Costume Sneak-Peek

I’m soo close to being finished with the girls Halloween costumes!  This is the first year that Macey has put in a request for what she wants to be for Halloween.  I couldn’t say no, but I wasn’t exactly thrilled with her choice.  I had to add some pink into her costume so she wouldn’t be mistaken for a boy.  I guess the big benefit to having a sewing machine is being able to make whatever you want.  I doubt there are any “girl” dinosaur costumes at the big-box stores.  After I made Macey’s costume Maddy wanted to wear it and kept saying “me too!” Whatever big sister does, Maddy wants also.  So I had to make a dinosaur costume for her as well.  Just a few more things to do and then they will be ready for the trunk-r-treat!
